Scientist I - In Vitro Cell Biologist/Immunologist (Oncology)
MedImmune
Granta Park, Cambridge, UK

Scientist I – (Oncology/Biology)

MedImmune, the global biologics unit of AstraZeneca, is committed to developing better medicines that help people live healthier, longer and more satisfying lives. The company is focused on the areas of infection, respiratory and inflammatory disease, oncology and neuroscience, with two marketed products and a robust pipeline of promising new product candidates. MedImmune’s state-of-the-art Cambridge site (formerly Cambridge Antibody Technology) is home to around 500 employees, and serves as the company’s European hub for research and development.

MedImmune is aiming to expand its Research Team in Oncology with two in vitro Scientist I positions. Working within the cellular immunology group of the Oncology team, you will be responsible for developing and running discriminating cell-based models of disease relevant to the discovery and characterisation of cancer therapeutics.

You will play a key role in building the biological rationale for target validation and in the discovery and development of novel therapeutics designed to target the immune system to treat cancer. The successful candidate will work closely with multi-functional project teams and collaborate with the wider Medimmune/AZ organisation to ensure project progression.

We are looking for a research scientist with an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the immune system e.g. human T-cell, NK, myeloid biology. Key to success would be strong practical expertise in a range of cellular immunology techniques e.g. activation protocols, ELISA (or equivalent), flow cytometry, isolation, culture and functional analysis of immune cell subsets; plus a range of in vitro skills that can be applied to drug discovery and evaluation in oncology. You should ideally have practical experience of studying immunology relevant to cancer: immunomodulation or cell killing mechanisms and a good understanding of tumour immunology and the tumour micro-environment.

For this position you will require a BSc in a biological science e.g. immunology, biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology plus a PhD or equivalent experience in immunology or cancer biology. In addition, at least one year’s practical experience of developing and implementing in vitro immunological cell-based assays or in vitro models of disease would be an advantage, as would experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical environment.

The successful applicant will be a strong team player with good collaborative skills, have the ability to plan and execute experimental work, and the capability to work independently. You should have strong communication skills, show flexibility and adaptability, and be a proactive individual able to demonstrate initiative and an innovative scientific approach.

MedImmune is an Equal Opportunities Employer. We seek to empower each individual, and respect the diverse cultures, perspectives, skills and experiences within our work place.
