An International Community for NANOTECHNOLOGY
Introducing in brief the INL

The result from the joint efforts of Spain and Portugal

The INL results from the joint efforts involving:

  • on the part of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal: representatives of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), the Science and Higher Education International Bureau (GRICES);
  • on the part of Spain: the Secretariat-General for Scientific and Technological Policy, the Directorate General of Research (DGI) and the Directorate General of Technological Policy (DGTP).

The INL aims at leading on new institutional partnerships in Science and Technology in Europe

  • The INL will be set up as a fully international research organization open to the membership of other European Countries.

The INL will be open to international cooperation with other world regions

  • The INL will foster the international cooperation with other regions, namely North America, Latin America and certain Asian States.

The INL offers internationally attractive conditions

  • The INL will create especially attractive conditions for 200 top class level researchers to be carefully and ambitiously recruited all over the world to work at the forefront of knowledge, aiming this way, the immediate high reputation and the international excellence level.

Concentration on Nanoscale Science and Technology

  • The INL will concentrate on Nanotechnology, having in mind applications to other several areas, following a interdisciplinary and transversal approach. The scientific scope will include fundamental and applied, experimental and theoretical aspects.

Knowledgeable and credible International Advisory Board

  • Roberto G. M. Caciuffo;
  • Thomas Jovin;
  • Emilio Mendez;
  • Christopher B. Murray;
  • Aristides A. G. Requicha;
  • Mihail C. Roco;
  • Heinrich Rohrer.

Priority Research areas

  • Nanomedicine;
  • Environment monitoring and security and food quality control;
  • Nanoelectronics (beyond CMOS);
  • Nano-machines and nanomanipulation.

Physical and Scientific infrastructure

  • The INL will have a land parcel of about 47,000 m2 in Braga;
  • Central Micro and Nanofabrication;
  • Central Scanning Probe Microscopy Laboratory;
  • Central Biology and Biochemistry facility;
  • Central Structural and Interface Characterization Laboratory.

One of the best practice cases

  • The INL was selected as one of the best practices cases to be presented in the first workshop of best practices on the Lisbon Agenda.
